Get Moving With These Helpful Tips

Published on  by Charly Tate

Once you’ve found the dream home, successfully negotiatedand made it yours, there’s still plenty of work to be done. Moving can seem like a whole other big, not-so-pleasant project in itself.

As a proud homeowner of your new place, you’ll fall into one of two categories: The folks packing up and moving to another neighborhood in town (maybe just down the road), or the folks relocating from out of state, sometimes across the country, maybe even across the ocean.Depending on your current living situation, you may or may not have a lot of stuff to move. But even if you only have one or two big and heavy things, it can be a chore to pack, load, and transfer. Here are some tips to help get you moving forward!

  1. Label and Organize Everything
Unless you’re in a big hurry and you have no choice, it’s never a good idea to stash things anywhere and everywhere in boxes and bins. Take your time, and pack each room separately, labeling everything. You might even color-code boxes and labels by room to make it easier once you’re moved into your new home.
  2. Let Some Things Go
Moving is a great time to downsize and toss things that have been sitting in the cobwebs for a while. We all have a box or two of keepsakes we’ll never let go of. But there’s got to be some stuff you can part with! Consider donating usable items (and getting a tax write off).
  3. Get Help!
Whether they’re trusted friends or family members, getting help from a few folks will save time (and your back). Don’t be too proud to ask: Some people may pitch in for nothing, but it’s best to follow up with a big ‘thank you’ of some sort: Host a nice dinner or return the favor when it’s time for them to relocate.
  4. Hire A Reliable Company
Someone needs to transfer everything from one location to the other, and unless you want to make a dozen trips in your car (impossible, if you’re moving a long distance), you’ll have to rent a U-Haul. Better yet, find a reliable moving company to help with the extra-big and heavy items, and get everything to your new place safely. You’ll be glad you did!
